Trauma: Psychological and Somatic Symptoms
Dear Clients,
Trauma overwhelms our ability to cope and places our minds and bodies in a state of shock. There is no 'right or wrong' way to respond during a traumatic event and each person will react differently in terms of their behavior and reactions. Although the reactions of each individual are unique, their trauma symptoms are not.
On a psychological level
It is normal for people to experience confusion, fear, numbness, anxiety, shock and helplessness. Additionally, they may experience guilt, shame, depression, nervousness, mood swings, difficulty sleeping or eating, irritability, and a general sense of despair. It is common to feel like you are "mentally checking out" (the psychology term is 'disassociation') from what is happening around you.
On a physiological level
Trauma causes the body to go into a state of panic. Some symptoms include lightheadedness, nausea, rapid and shallow breathing, trembling, headaches, stomach pains, and muscle tension. All of these signs point to a severe trauma reaction and is NORMAL.
So when does this become abnormal?
Trauma reactions become abnormal if it does not get any better or stay with you for longer than one month. This is usually when we recommend people to seek professional help from a counselor or medical doctor since they might be at risk of developing a more serious condition known as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD for short.
It is important to note that not all trauma symptoms will turn into PTSD, however, if it does, this is normal too. There is nothing wrong with struggling to cope or extra support. PTSD is a condition that can be managed in several ways and you must receive help as soon as possible since it will make the recovery process faster and easier.
Whether your trauma reactions is short-term or long-term, just remember that this is nothing to feel embarrassed or ashamed about. Your counselor and doctor are not there to judge you, instead they will help you to the best of their abilities and will always strive to make your well-being their first priority.
Be blessed,
Madeleine
